Social City Mastery: Basic Principles

There are several principles you need to get a handle on if you wish to be a Social City master:

Principle #1: It’s a game.

This may seem obvious, but recognizing that Social City is a game is a necessary step towards awesome results. Like all games, Social City has rules. For example, everything has to be positioned on a grid square in the game. You probably won't have thought about that rule because it’s so implicit in the game. Social City is full of rules just like this that people may or may not have actively noticed.

This is important: Many of these rules bear only a passing similarity to real life.

Often in the real world buildings are placed on funny shaped lots, streets curve around neighborhoods and sections of a city are not square. Ok, I know what you’re thinking: Why am I telling you this?

If you play Social City expecting it to work like the real world, you may be let down. Nevertheless, that isn’t all bad.

I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t make $100,000 each day - you'll be able to in Social City. Furthermore, I am not entrusted with city planning, but I am in Social City. Now that you have this in mind, let’s move on to...

Principle #2: Priorities determine results.

Regardless of whether you’re conscious of this or not, your priorities determine your results. Whatever you most want from a game decides how you play that game. People who are determined to succeed at any cost look very different from those just trying to make friends and enjoy playing. Don't forget, often this isn’t your conscious choice. You might not know the underlying reason for how you play the game.

Don’t worry, there’s no right way to play Social City. Nevertheless, you should determine what you really want from the game before you start playing. Or in the more likely scenario that you’re already playing, take the time to choose your priorities before continuing.

For instance, you may decide you simply want to have a nice looking city in which the population is happy. Congratulations! In that case, you don’t need to be concerned about specific tactics. Just have fun and figure it out as you go along.

Maybe you want to get to a high level quickly or have more people in your city than a handful of your friends. That’s awesome, too. However, you’ll need to develop a strategy that enables you to maximize your efforts if you want to make that happen.

No matter what, my articles can help you achieve your goals.

Which leads us to...

Principle #3: Have a goal.

It is my opinion that almost anything in life is more enjoyable when you have a goal.

Games are activities focused on enjoyment and most of them have goals: Halo - shoot the aliens and stay alive; Monopoly - bankrupt everyone else by charging them increasingly more money; Harry Potter video games - wave your wand correctly to cast the spells to advance through the storyline; You get the idea. Games have goals - that’s how you know when you succeed.

Social City is a different style of game, however. Growing your city appears to be the goal, but exactly how do you know if you’re finished? To make the game more fulfilling, I like to recommend adding goals for yourself.

Your goal could be to get a certain number of people in your city, to achieve a certain level, to replicate your own real world city inside the virtual world of Social City or something else entirely.

Here’s my example of this: My goal is to reach Level 40 in 30 days of playing Social City. I also intend to spend only an hour per day to get it done. That’s right, I’m planning to be working on a goal right alongside you!

Anyway, no matter what your goal is, the thing is to have one. After that it is possible to focus on what it takes to make your goal happen and enjoy the thrill of achieving it.

Recap (or the super-fast version)

Here’s a brief summary to help you remember these ideas:

  • Principle #1: It’s a game - Social City doesn’t stick to the rules of the real world. Learn the Social City rules and play by them. (Don’t worry, I’ll help you.)
  • Principle #2: Priorities determine results - Sort out your priorities so you can focus on achieving them without distraction.
  • Principle #3: Have a goal - Turn those priorities into specific goals to make your game play more satisfying.
